Why it’s important to understand Artificial Intelligence

Whether you like it or not, we are entering a phase where Artificial Intelligence (AI) will become more present in our lives. As marketers and companies, it’s important that we fully understand what AI exactly is and how we can implement it in our strategy and skillset.

Don’t worry, AI won’t take over your life – although it might on some areas, like ordering food for in your fridge. Sounds wonderful, right? With the upcoming AI-based smart speakers like Amazon Alexa or Google Home, it will be important for companies to be up-to-date with this new way of communication, especially for the e-commerce sector because these technologies might reinvent the way we shop.

Artificial Intelligence doesn’t necessarily need to be complex, as you’ll read in this article. The technology can create possibilities for your business you hadn’t thought of before. Long story short, it’s important for companies to stay ahead of the game and jump on the AI bandwagon.

Artificial Intelligence?

This article won’t go much in depth on the technical details of Artificial Intelligence, which mainly uses data and algorithms to function. AI is defined as the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. It’s important to know that there are a lot of different functionalities of AI, some more advanced than others.

A simple example of an AI program is an algorithm that can predict your shoe size based on your height. If the program is provided with data of the shoe sizes and height of all Europeans, then it can give a pretty good prediction of what your shoe size might be.

We are currently using AI and machine learning without sometimes even knowing it. Think of the recommended for you section on Netflix, the Spotify songs that start playing after you finished your playlist or Waze rerouting you around an accident. However, these are all big companies. Does this mean that using AI is too far-fetched for smaller businesses? It’s not – using the technology can open a lot of new possibilities, even if you have very little data available.

A lot of people currently think that AI is very complex, so they won’t consider it an option when it comes to solving problems for your business. It’s always worth it to at least have a look at what AI can offer.
